| The Luxurious Celebrity Galaxy ship... Her name conveys the sheer vastness of space. And at nearly 900 feet in length, her size, as well as what she offers her guests, is indeed, out of this world. One of three Century class of ships, Galaxy offers everything you need to ensure a comfortable, memorable cruise experience. Tastefully decorated accommodations, bars and lounges to suit every taste and restaurants to please every palate, combine to make Galaxy a truly wonderful, jaw-dropping world unto herself. Ship features include: The Celebrity Theater and the 10,053-sq.-foot AquaSpa. The Celebrity Galaxy...................... Overview Galaxy, the second in a series of three vessels, debuted in December 1996. Century was first in the series in 1995 and Mercury followed in 1997. Celebrity positions itself as a premium level cruise line, meaning that their target guest is looking for a cruise experience that includes some of the amenities and refinements of the luxury lines without losing the element of fun. Galaxy accomplishes this admirably by concentrating on sophisticated levels of food and beverage service most often associated with pricier lines: martini and champagne bars, cigar lounges and caviar service, while not skimping on shipboard activities for passengers who like to let their hair down. Galaxy's extensive multimillion dollar art collection was hand picked by Christina Chandris, wife of the former Chairman of the line with the assistance of the Marlborough Gallery in New York. Many improvements have been added to Galaxy including an increase in the size of the public rooms, a high-tech atrium paneled with a 40-foot video panel, and a retractable glass dome covering the aft swimming pool -- an area that is particularly popular with patrons of the pizzeria and the Oasis Cafe buffet. Dining If there is one thing the name Celebrity is synonymous with it is cuisine. A menu designed by Michelin 3-star chef, Michel Roux makes it clear why Celebrity ships are at the top of their game for their price range. Fresh seafood and produce are provisioned on the fly, and much of the food is cooked to order and delicious. The menu features nightly spa and vegetarian choices. There is a children's menu on request, and special diets can be accommodated if requested at the time of booking. There are two facilities serving the pool area, the Oasis Cafe and the Grill. The Cafe is the basic lunch and dinner buffet operation, with a good variety. There are a handful of assistants available to help passengers to their tables. The Grill serves tea in the afternoon and pizza at various times during the day. They also do burgers and hot dogs at lunchtime. The grill also serves an alternative casual sit-down dinner on long port days, for which reservations must be made. A limited room service menu is available 24-hours a day. Galaxy's midnight buffet extremely well done and varying themes keep passengers going back nightly -- some themes are served pool side, Mexican and Caribbean in particular, to encourage an all out party atmosphere with dancing and a live band. Two types of tea are served onboard, an elegant tea in the dining room once a week and a casual afternoon tea in the Oasis Cafe. BEST STATEROOM CHOICES... Onboard Experience Celebrity began a transformation in 2002 with a new logo, the tagline "a true departure" and new, luxurious touches were added. These include expanded options and hours in Celebrity's AquaSpa by Elemis, a broader range of enrichment lectures, increased choices in cuisine including a Sushi Café, sunset happy hours with live music and refreshments, increased options in dining hours, with 24-hour food service, sunset yoga and Pilates classes, frosty towels and sorbet service poolside, and increased opportunities for guests to interact with the ship's officers. Along with her two sister ships (Mercury and Century), the Celebrity Galaxy provides an upscale, elegant setting where the atmosphere is warm, friendly and, at night, quite lively. At 77,000-tons, these ships are in the mega-liner category, but public rooms, dining area and deck space are so well laid out that you'll never be confused about where you are headed. The staff is warm and efficient, contributing to the sense of more personal service. These ships top Celebrity's "Biggest Bang For The Buck" list with good reason - the ships are stunning, the food and service the best in the mid-price range of ships, the cabin amenities extensive and oh those spas! Things to Do Entertainment: Main stream cruise ship entertainment which seemed to please most passengers during my cruise -- two production shows per week, comedians and cabaret singers in lounges. Casino Royal is normally quite full at night, and has the major games of chance and plenty of slot machines. Fitness: Galaxy has excellent spas, the 10,053-square foot AquaSpa, with exotic treatments never encountered before. A favorite is Thalassotherapy, a more relaxing treatment than a massage, at $16.50 for a full day's use or free with any spa treatment. You move from one apparatus to another in an ample heated swimming pool and water massages each part of the body - the effect is better than a massage. This facility is operated by Steiner's of London, and the staff will try to push their products on you during massages, so get your defenses up before you go in! The separate fitness centres have excellent trainers, state-of-the-art machines all facing the sea with aerobics and stretching classes scheduled during the day. There are two large pools, one with a magradome (a retractable glass roof) which is a big advantage on Alaska cruises when weather is less than spectacular. The main pool outdoors has a live rock band during days at sea, which personally bothers me. But there are plenty of secluded spots for sunning where no noises intrude. Cuisine: Celebrity Cruises' cuisine is the result of French master chef Michel Roux, who has hands-on involvement from designing the ships' galleys to creating menus and even sailing aboard the vessels for spot inspections. I've had memorable entrees like salmon with fennel and prime rib, sublime desserts and made-to-order pasta that is perfection. Twice per week, Celebrity holds a late-night party on deck, one with a Caribbean theme, the other Western. Restaurants: Drop dead gorgeous describes the Galaxy's main restaurant, its main focal point a sweeping wide staircase with wrought iron railing. Located in the ship's stern, it features two-deck-high glass windows that offer a warm, natural light during the daytime and a stunning, panoramic close-up view of the ocean. Tables are widely spaced and the sound levels in the room permit easy conversation. The setting for casual lunch and breakfast is the Horizon Court, located next to the pool. With two buffet lines there is very little waiting, and waiters frequently take your tray to the table. Be sure to try dining on the back deck, where the only sounds are the sea below. Decor: Modern yet sophisticated, Galaxy has modern art spread throughout, elegant settings for "Michael's Club" (the ship's piano bar) and très chic are the martini and champagne/caviar bars. You'll find top quality brass, marble, fabrics and live tropical plants throughout. Overall, the milieu is warm and relaxing with distinctive touches that ensure one is aboard a very special ship. Public Areas: While most central atrium's are the "heart" of a ship and focal point for locating public rooms. The three-story high area aboard Galaxy is really just an entrance area -- not really intended for "people watching." My favorite hangout for that is the coffee bar with a trolly of tempting pastries nearby where I can sip a frothy cappuccino as fellow passengers stroll by. The most distinctive room is "Michael's Club", a clubby piano lounge. Additionally, Galaxy was one of the first ships to feature champagne and martini bars, popular with many before dinner. The Celebrity Theater has comfortable seating with tables for cocktails and there isn't a bad seat in the house. Evening cabaret and daytime wine tastings are held in an oval lounge with spacious chairs, a bar, and a large stage. The ship's most popular area for cocktails and dancing before and after dinner is the large, Rendez-Vous Square, located near the restaurant -- here, couples dance to live music and others engage in lively conversation over cocktails. My pick for one of the most beautiful observation lounges afloat is Galaxy's Hemisphere Lounge -- 14-foot high panels of glass permit wonderful viewing; it's a relaxing setting for watching the ship arrive and depart from port. The ship has a large casino with slot machines and a full selection of gaming tables, You'll find four boutiques, a computer room (kids play games throughout the day), a card room, Internet room and well-stocked library. Cabins: Galaxyhas some of the largest cabins afloat with wonderful amenities. Standard amenities include TV with close circuit movies, CNN and pay-per-view first run movies; radio, direct dial phone, bathrobes, mini-refrigerator plus large bathrooms with showers, vanity and hair dryers. One may dine in-cabin at night and order from the dinner menu and massages may also be scheduled in staterooms. Standard inside and outside staterooms are 172 sq. feet, with good storage space. These ships have lovely cabins with private verandah at 184 square feet. There are 50 suites with private veranda in four categories: standard (316 sq. feet); sky suites (425 sq. feet); royal suites (631 sq. feet) and penthouse suites (1,219 suites), all with large private balcony, butlers, marble bathrooms and personalized stationary. The Fabulous Celebrity Galaxy... Sunbathe on the Sky Deck, meet your friends at Rendezvous Square on the Promenade Deck or enjoy a formal dinner with them at the magnificent multi-level Orion Restaurant. You won't have to travel far to see the Las-Vegas style shows in the Celebrity theater. Galaxy is indeed a ship of uncommon style, with loads of activities to enjoy-- all while enjoying Galaxy's five-star service and sophistication |
